Square Footage Calculator

Square Footage Calculator

Work out the square footage of any room, floor, yard or plot β€” rectangles, circles and triangles, several areas added together, with a waste allowance and a material cost estimate. Feet, metres, inches, centimetres or yards. Free, instant and completely private.

Add a row for each separate area β€” two rectangles make an L-shaped room. Results update as you type.

Measuring an awkward room? Split it into rectangles and add them up β€” see how to calculate square footage by hand, including L-shaped rooms, circles and triangles.

The example everyone starts with: a 12 Γ— 12 room

Square footage is just length times width. A bedroom that measures 12 feet by 12 feet has an area of:

12 ft Γ— 12 ft = 144.00 sq ft β€” that is 13.38 mΒ², or 16.00 ydΒ².

Flooring for that room at $5 per square foot costs $720 for the bare area β€” and with the usual 10% waste allowance (158.4 sq ft) it comes to $792. That is exactly the maths the calculator above does for any shape or size.

Common questions

Measure the length and the width of the room in feet, then multiply them together: length Γ— width = square footage. A room that is 12 feet long and 12 feet wide is 12 Γ— 12 = 144 square feet. Measure at the widest points, and if your tape gives inches, either enter the unit as inches above or divide inches by 12 to get feet.
